Faro: Restaurant by the Sea

Looking for a place to dine and unwind with an awesome panoramic view of the seaside? Or a place where you can emancipate from the city life and rekindle your love affair with nature? Don’t fret. Just a few walks from the historic and century-old landmark, the Bagacay Point Lighthouse, is the newly opened Faro restaurant.

Faro Liloan
This Filipino-Mediterranean themed restaurant is owned by Tiffany Lam and Chow Cañete.

Faro was inspired by the late Reuben Cañete, a cultural critic, visual historian, art writer, painter and a multi-awarded professor at the Asian Center of UP Diliman. The restaurant’s name came from the Latin and Greek word, pharos, which means lighthouse. Pharos is also an ancient island in Alexandria, Egypt which is famous for its lighthouses. And thus, the name.

The Place

The establishment’s large window facade gives a beautiful and perfectly ambient lighting. The very rustic brick-themed kitchen, as well as its wooden floors, complements well with the restaurant’s modern Spanish-Mediterranean interior design.

The setting is suitable for different types of events. From parties to meetings, Faro can cater to all types of occasions. If you prefer to be in touch with nature, al fresco dining is also available here.

The Food

Faro serves a variety of classic Filipino dishes with a hint of Mediterranean cooking. They also serve mouth-watering pizzas made from scratch that are baked in a wood-fired brick oven. They are among the few restaurants in Cebu that uses this type of oven, as they try to preserve the authenticity of Mediterranean cooking.

We had a taste of their House Specials, the Paella and Reubenʼs Signature Tapas platter that consists of beef sirloin strips, calamari, buffalo wings and pork BBQ skewers. We also had the Meat Loverʼs Supreme pizza that was served straight from their specially-made oven.

Aside from these best-sellers, we also splurged on other delectable dishes. There was the Creamy Lengua, the super tender Goat Curry, and the all-time Pinoy favorites, Pochero and Sisig. Their sisig is like no other, and I highly recommend that you try it on your visit.

A meal just won’t be complete if not concluded with dessert, and the Creme Brulee does the trick. It was, without a doubt, the perfect way to end such a hearty meal.

The Drinks

The usual soda drinks are readily available here. They also serve local beers and other top-of-the-line liquor, both local and imported. Teas, juices and shakes are also at hand. They have an array of Lemonade Specials, like strawberry, mint cucumber and pineapple, and fruit shakes such as melon, mango and watermelon, a personal favorite.

Coffee-lovers need not worry for they serve coffee, too, and you can have the best spot in the restaurant by the window overlooking the sea.

Personal Pick

These are what stood out among the set of dishes Faro prepared for us:

Reuben’s Signature Tapas
A combination of sirloin strips, calamari, buffalo wings and pork BBQ were cooked to perfection. It is any meat-lover’s heaven on a plate.

Paella
After having had other paellas, Faro’s was probably the best. Its presentation was very appealing to the eyes, as it was served on a cast-iron pan, while the taste didn’t disappoint either.

Meat Loverʼs Supreme
This is one of their brick-oven pizzas. It was delicious in every “slice”.

Lengua
What made this dish a stand-out was the tenderness of the meat and creaminess of the sauce.

Sisig
I am probably a half-hearted sisig lover, but I must say, their sisig is a notable one. Really, a must-try.
