On this week’s episode of the Blogger Spotlight, we are pleased to have someone who accidentally got indulge into blogging after a successful trip from somewhere. Driven and urged to write about her experiences and adventures of her trip, she started a blog and the rest was history. TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND HOW YOU GOT INTO BLOGGING?

Monica: I’m a Psychology student from the University of the Philippines Cebu (and this is hopefully my last year), so life is all sorts of busy. Blogging was really never something I thought I’d be doing, seeing as I barely even have time to get a good lie-in, but when I went to Kuala Lumpur last January, I got this urge to write about travelling. My grandpa, also a traveller, writes his stories in annual travel diary that he sends to friends and relatives just before Christmas, and I wanted to do the same. The trouble is, I’m not very good in writing long narratives. I tend to lose interst halfway through the project and just give it up as a lost cause. So I thought, why not start a blog instead? And here I am!

WHERE DID YOU GET THE IDEA OF YOUR BLOG’S NAME?

Monica: was looking through a list of interesting travel-related words and I came across “afterglobe“. It’s supposed to mean the feeling one gets after a long and immensely satisfying trip. I added the [w] to emphasize “afterglow” – and I’d like to think this is the state we’re in before the itch of the travel bug settles in.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT BLOGGING?

Monica: Blogging is a good way to help people. I’ve always been a sucker for spreading knowledge, and awareness, and all that rot, so the fact that I know my words are in some way helpful to others makes blogging an activity that’s close to my heart.

WHAT IS THE NICHE OF YOUR BLOG AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE IT?

Monica: The main niche of my blog is Travel. I started afterglowbe as a means to tell stories of where I’ve been, how I went there, how I survived, etc. Late this year, though, I began blogging about Food as well. I just couldn’t deny the pull, anymore, especially since all my past attempts at blogging were centered on food.

WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION FOR YOUR BLOG POSTS?

Monica: My Grandpa’s travel diaries, mostly. Then a bit from twomonkeystravel, biyaherapilipina, backpackingwithabook, and… all the food I eat/cook.

BESIDES BLOGGING, WHAT OTHER INTERESTS DO YOU HAVE?

Monica: Traveling, baking, cooking, answering crossword puzzles, writing, painting, playing the violin and the piano, spending so much time in the supermarket, reading, tinkering with my computer, playing sports, snorkeling, and buying/making gifts for people. Those are just what’s at the tip of the iceberg! Basically, there are so many things I love doing that it’s no wonder why I don’t have much free time.

HOW WAS YOUR BLOGGING SO FAR? HAVE YOU RECEIVED AWARDS AND RECOGNITION SINCE YOU STARTED?

Monica: Blogging has been relatively quiet, so far. Not that I’m expecting anything more! I’ve been slacking off lately due to the amount of schoolwork I have to do (which is ghastly, really).

WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO JUST STARTED BLOGGING

Monica: If you’re passionate about what you’re doing, you’ll have fun doing it. Also, don’t force yourself to write if you really don’t want to. The best blog posts are laced with love, effort, and timing.

LASTLY, WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR BLOG IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS?

Monica: Hopefully still alive. Ths time with more stories and better content.
